Liquefied Petroleum Gas or GPL, LP Gas, liquid petroleum gas or basically mixture of Propane (C₃H₈) and Butane (C₄H₁₀) is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in heating appliances and vehicles. It is increasingly used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons in an effort to reduce damage to the ozone layer. When specifically used as a vehicle fuel it is often referred to as auto gas.
LPG is prepared by refining Petroleum or “wet” Natural gas, and is almost entirely derived from fossil fuel sources, being manufactured during the refining of Petroleum (Crude oil), or extracted from Petroleum or Natural gas streams as they emerge from the ground.
As its boiling point is below room temperature, LPG will evaporate quickly at normal temperatures and pressures and is usually supplied in Pressurized Tanker Vessels.
Propane(C₃H₈): Propane is produced as a by-product of two other processes, Natural gas processing and Petroleum refining. The processing of natural gas involves removal of butane, propane, and large amounts of ethane from the raw gas, in order to prevent condensation of these volatiles in natural gas pipelines.
While Oil refineries produce some propane as a by-product of cracking Petroleum into Gasoline or Heating oil.
Propane is commonly used as fuel for engines, oxy-gas torches, barbecues, portable stoves, and residential central heating.
